Restaurant Review

Storm in a cup: a home away from home

As you get off the elevator and head straight through what seems like the veranda of a home, you come across a big wooden door that welcomes you. The first few steps might confuse you, but rest assured as you are not trespassing in someone else's home; this serene and homely place is called Storm in a Cup.

Restaurants and cafes have become the main hangout spot in Dhaka, but the lack of homeliness and ease in these spaces is what has given birth to Storm in a Cup. The main idea behind this place was to provide a space that resembles the calm and comfort one would seek at home, outside of their homes.

Welcoming interiors

The very first scene that welcomes one after coming in is the large wall covered with potted plants and large wooden windows. Call it the perfect backdrop for an aesthetic picture or the best table to enjoy your meal, this space is without a doubt one of the most popular dining spaces in town at the moment.

Farther inside, there are a handful of rooms, all with different decorations, but a similar homely theme everywhere. While some are decorated with books, others have art pieces, small sculptures and plants. They also come with a wide stretched window that allows in natural lighting and provides a great outside view. These separate rooms are perfect to throw a small party in, or to sit down for meetings or discussions given the closed off spaces.

Another dining area worth mentioning is the table area against the wide window that lets you take a peek at the big Storm in a Cup sign. This little space is more like a dessert and tea area, and less of a dining space, but if you prefer to take in the view outside while having lunch, nothing will stop you.

Breaking down the menu

The mains include a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, and fried bites, but the pastas and sliders take the cake in terms of popularity. The Pasta Marinara and Pesto Pasta are amongst the customer favourites, and so is the chicken slider which fills one up almost instantly. Dessert wise, surely the brownie with ice-cream is one of the most ordered, for the brownie is served warm, as if it just came out of the oven, while the drizzled ice cream helps cool it down.

Storm in a Cup also offers a wide range of drinks, which range from hot and cold coffees to smoothies and mocktails. No matter what you order, take some time out to enjoy a warm cup of coffee beside the large window, for it is a rare experience, not to be missed.

Neat melodies

While everything else is on point, the wrong music choice can ruin the ambience everyone works so hard to create. To mix right in with the atmosphere and the theme, Storm in a Cup will often play a selection of classic Bengali songs that complement the space beautifully. Occasionally, soothing jazz music can also be heard which melts in your ears, just like the food here does in your mouth!

So, whether it is the choice of music, the serene ambience or the choice of food, Storm in a Cup is a must visit for anyone and everyone who seeks a quiet getaway in this busy city. It is located at House 1, Road 2, 5th floor, Dhanmondi, (Aarong's Top Floor), Dhaka, Bangladesh.
