Video on the Bangladesh Women’s Team: Flagbearers of a nation’s pride
In a world where the battle between the sexes rages on, the Bangladesh Women’s football team gears up for the next league of the race — the Bangamata U19 International Gold Cup 2019. This one of a kind tournament supports women’s empowerment and encourages younger girls to combat negative ideologies by engaging in sports.
A poignant video highlighting the struggles and achievement of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib and how her life can be an inspiration for a generation of youth has been made by Gazi Shubhro, featuring the iconic Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, directed by Gazi Shubro, and produced by RED dot, has already created much hype on social media.
The video beautifully entwines the philosophy of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib's contributions, struggles, and dedications to the Liberation War, and Bannya goes on to say, "She taught us that Bengali women do not surrender…"
The video is a fresh take on what a woman's role in the Bangladeshi field of sports actually mean. With a moving narrative in the background, the video shows snippets of what Bangladesh stands for, and the way we have now learned to support our women's football team at the international level.
According to director Gazi Shubro, "I have seen these footballers; most of these female players are a part of rural Bangladesh, and football has allowed them to escape their fates of social, financial oppressions."
He further went on to discuss about how the video shines on the multiple roles a woman plays in her everyday life, and not just that of a footballer.
We now stand at the crossroads of time when, despite tribulations, our women's football team outshines their male counterpart. This not only shows that, given the opportunity, any person can achieve their potential, but also the fact that in Bangladesh, at certain levels, women are already leaders. The real heroes as shown in the video are truly the female players; the flag barriers of women of Bangladesh in the arena of football.
The Bangamata U19 International Gold Cup 2019 will see the participation of Mongolia, Tajikistan, Laos, UAE, Kyrgyzstan and host Bangladesh. The sporting event kicks off on 22 April, 2019 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka.
