Red, green and colours of Victory!

16 December, 1971 saw this nation taste victory for the first time. Resilient to injustice, the people of Bangladesh fought unequivocally for nine months, and achieved their very own sovereign country– Bangladesh. 

Every independent country on the world map has a unique flag representing the values of the country. Similarly Bangladesh's flag, resplendent in the colours of red and green, symbolises many things including the vast greenery of Bangladesh, with all its vitality and youthfulness. 

The circle in the centre of the flag has a dual representation - a rising sun mounting on a brand new nation; as well as the memory of the bloodshed and sacrifices endured by the Bangladeshis to make their nation independent.

Hence, the colour red and green is eternal and exceptional for the people of this land, no matter where in the world they might be. The vibrant colours are tantamount to Victory, Liberation and Freedom.

If you were wondering about the best way to feel in sync with the nation on a special day such as 16 December; there are certainly many options, the most visible being clothes dyed in the colours of freedom - a most convenient way of showing reverence to the homeland. 

Chondona R. Dewan, the owner and head designer of the famous fashion store Chondon's, says- 

"We are excited to make saris, panjabi, kameez and kurtis in red and green signifying the victory of this nation. People in our country love celebrating the victory day elaborately; many buy flags – hoisting them from balconies, others wear clothes in a combination of red and green, commemorating the liberating aspect of freedom. 

There are many shows aired on TV and radio in the month of December and it has almost become a creed that everyone wear red and green on these special shows, hence the demand for the vibrant hues are always there and we are humbled, to be able to serve."

Red and green are both pulsating colours, and can be used singularly on any outfit. One can wear a green tie-dye sari or a panjabi to commemorate the propitious occasion. For a simple and sober touch, sometimes a tad bit more authentic as well, simple green saris can be paired with red blouses or a red border to get the complete look. As for men, the green panjabis can have minimal embroidery in maroon red or blood red; there can also be printed slogans in red, over a green base.

Since, the month of victory is an important occasion for all Bangladeshis; the fashion houses of the country always take the fact into consideration, and this year is no different. 

A large display of victory inspired collections will be available at the stores through the month of December— like Kay Kraft, Anjans, Bishwo Rang, Rang Bangladesh, Jaatra, Aarong, Aranya, Kumudini, etc. Of course, with collections for adults, there are also complementing options for children - which celebration is ever complete without the touch of a child's fervour infused into it?
