Winter Workout Tips

One doesn't need a reason to be lazy about working out but winter provides many anyways. Chilly mornings, lazy sunshine and a warm, cosy bed mean our bodies refuse to cooperate with our workout routine. Nevertheless, we must persist - here are some tips to get your blood pumping and yourself motivated for working out in winter.

Protect your head, hands, feet and ears

Putting on hats, gloves and socks to protect your head, hands and feet from losing too much body heat, which will chill your muscles and bones, making them more vulnerable to injury as well catching a chill

Hydrate hydrate hydrate!

Winter beckons parched throats and dry skin as the air becomes dryer and dryer. Working out in these conditions also means losing water in your body through sweating, etc. It is crucial to drink more water throughout the day to make up for the amount lost. Adding electrolytes to your daily intake will keep you energized through your workouts as well.

Start slow

As with any workout routine, starting slow is recommended. Especially in winter when your muscles tighten up. Start slow with stretches to warm up your body and move on to your regular workout from there. Don't forget to stretch at the end of your workout to cool down as well!

Spice things up!

Humans are creatures of habit but also one so frequently bored. Add to that the winter blues and you get a solid recipe for idling in front of the TV. To jazz up your winter workout, start a Zumba class instead of lifting one day. Incorporate home workouts from Youtube instead of going to the gym. Replace your planks with a Russian twist. Making workouts different and exciting is key to replacing the inner couch potato during winter!

Segment your workout

Winter is a hectic time for everyone - from weddings to countryside picnics to office appraisals; it's hard to find the motivation and time to do a full workout routine. But you can definitely segment it into pieces. Wake up early and do a short exercise to start your day. Ditch the car and bike to work. Do your arm workout in between office breaks. Do your squats while watching your favourite show or movie.

As the days get shorter and nights get colder, it is inevitable everyone will have a hard time working out but remember, where there is a will there is a way!
