Save our heritage sites

It has been recently reported that the demolition work of the historic “Khamarbari” building is underway. The news has come to me as a shock. I live in a nearby neighbourhood and have grown quite fond of the building. I'm sure many people feel the same way. Personal feelings aside, why do we need to demolish a heritage site? Couldn't the government just restore it instead of demolishing? When will we learn 

to value the importance of our heritage?
