IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia Conference, 2020 held in Indonesia
IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Network is a platform for IP researchers to share and discuss their papers and works-in-progress with other academics, practitioners, and policy makers. The IPIRA is led by Irene Calboli, Professor of Intellectual Property at Texas A&M University School of Law, USA and Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. In continuation of the previous year, IPIRA organized the 2nd IPIRA Conference on February 27-28, 2020 which was held at Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia in collaboration with WIPO Academy, IP, Government Procurement and Competition Division of WTO, Texas A&M University School of Law and Faculty of Law, University of Geneva. The representatives from the respective partner institutions were present and they shared their thoughts in the opening and closing ceremonies of the conference. The IPIRA Conference, 2020 is generously supported by WIPO Academy, WTO and International Trademarks Association (INTA). In the 2nd IPIRA Conference, more than 150 presenters and researchers gathered from various countries of the world which created multicultural and multi-dimensional atmosphere for deliberation, debate and discussion on different issues of intellectual property. Three young IP scholars and researchers from Bangladesh presented their works on Sui-generis system, Plant Variety Protection and Geographical Indications of Bangladesh.
The 2nd IPIRA Conference, 2020 had several parallel sessions where presenters addressed various complicated, interesting and timely issues of IP, including AI, Blockchain, New Technologies, Patents, Access to Medicines, Trademarks, Geographical Indications, Copyrights, Traditional Cultural Expressions, Traditional Knowledge, Plant Varieties, Sui Generis Rights, and Data Protection. The presenters received extensive comments, constructive criticisms and useful feedbacks from the chairs, panelists and audiences. In addition to parallel sessions, a special plenary session also took place addressing the significance of convergence between academic teaching, research and policy making on IP issues. Moreover, a workshop on "current, relevant and impactful research topics and relevant research methodologies for IP researchers" was also conducted by the leading IP scholars from Asia, Europe and the USA. Finally, IPIRA, Conference, 2020 was followed by cultural event and excursion to Mini Indonesia.
