A Dhaka court today again rejected the bail petition of the man, who publicly assaulted a rickshaw-puller in Dhaka's Bangshal area on May 4.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debdash Chandra Adhikary passed the order after Advocate Mehedi Hasan Tamal filed a petition with the court, seeking Sultan Ahmed's bail.

On May 5, Md Ali Reza Mamun, a sub-inspector of Bangshal Police Station, produced Sultan before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debbrata Biswas, showing him arrested under section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

After hearing, the magistrate rejected Sultan's bail petition and sent him to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj that day.

The court also ordered that Sultan will be in jail till May 23, the next scheduled date in the case.

Police detained Sultan soon after a video of him assaulting a rickshaw-puller went viral on social media on May 4, which triggered widespread criticism.

In the video, Sultan Ahmed, a resident of the area, was seen verbally abusing and hitting the rickshaw-puller.

Despite being assaulted, the rickshaw-puller was seemingly calm and was weeping. Yet, Sultan continued slapping him. At one stage, the rickshaw-puller collapsed and lost consciousness.

Sultan then tried to pull the man, holding him by the collar, when passers-by intervened and stopped him.

Soon after the incident, the rickshaw puller regained consciousness and left the spot with his rickshaw.
