Jatiya Party lawmaker Shariful Islam Jinnah gets bail in corruption case

The High Court today granted anticipatory bail to Shariful Islam Jinnah, Jatiya Party lawmaker from Bogura-2, for three weeks in a corruption case filed for amassing wealth illegally and concealing wealth information.

The HC, however, ordered the accused lawmaker to surrender to the trial court concerned in three weeks in connection with the case.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim came up with the order after Shariful Islam appeared before the bench and filed a bail petition in the case.

Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star that the HC bench granted bail to the accused for three weeks following his petition in which he said he is a regular taxpayer and the National Board of Revenue has never questioned his tax affairs.

Lawyers Sheikh Md Sirajul Islam and Munshi Moniruzzaman appeared for the petitioner, while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan stood for Anti-Corruption Commission during hearing of the petition.

The ACC filed the case with its Dhaka Integrated District Office-1 on February 2 against Shariful Islam for submitting a false asset statement of Tk 69 lakh and failing to mention the income source of Tk 1.6 crore.
