Land grabbers kill indigenous man in Dinajpur

At least three people were killed over land disputes in three districts yesterday and the day before.

An elderly adivasi (indigenous) man was stabbed to death allegedly by local land grabbers in Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Ghutu Soren, 55, son of late Fagu Soren of Kachua village, reports our Correspondent.

Family members said, seriously injured Ghutu died on the way to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.

Robi Soren, elder son of the deceased, said there had been a long-standing land dispute with some neighbours including Abdul Gaffar, Azgar Ali and Abdul Alim, sons of Md Anisur Rahman of Dangapara area in Hakimpur upazila.

Family members said that the attackers had been claiming 12 bigha of land of Ghutu Soren. They several times pressed him to leave the country, but Ghutu bravely faced all their evil attempts, they said.

Locals said when Ghutu went to Dangapara Bazar in Hakimpur upazila at around 10.00am,

Abdul Gaffar, Azgar Ali, Abdul Alim and Sujan Mia caught him and started beating on the spot.

Later, they dragged the elderly man to the house premises of Abdul Gaffar and started stabbing him in broad daylight.

Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the spot and rescued him. However, he succumbed to his injuries at around 3.00pm.

Away in Sirajganj, a Jubo League man was killed in Chandidasgati village on Friday evening over land dispute, reports our Pabna correspondent.

The deceased, Md Rana Rahman, 27, son of Habibur Rahman of Chandidasgati village in Sadar upazila was vice president of Jubo League ward no 6 under Shialkole union.

Sources said, a clash erupted between the men of Motlebur Rahman Hazi and Habibur Rahman of the village over felling a tree on the disputed land at about 4pm on Friday. During the clash Rana and his brother Rony were injured.

Later Rana died at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, Bogra.

In Habiganj, a man was killed and 50 others were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over a land-related dispute in Dighalbagh village in Sadar upazila on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Tota Maih, 60. The injured were admitted to Sadar Hospital, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.

Police and locals said, one Malek Miah and Bhingraj Miah of the village were long been at loggerhead over the ownership of a piece of land.

Over the matter, they locked in an altercation in the afternoon.

Later, supporters of the two, equipped with sharp weapons, attacked one another, triggering a fierce clash which left Tota Miah dead and 50 others injured.
