‘Kidnapper’ killed, 3 injured in Ctg mob beating

Locals torch their microbus

An alleged kidnapper was killed and his three associates were injured in a mob beating in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong this afternoon.

Locals caught the four while they were forcing a man into their microbus at Madam Bibir Hat and gave them a good beating, leaving them seriously injured. The mob also torched the vehicle, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

The injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where Tofazzal, 40, succumbed to his injuries around 5:20pm, said constable Shilabrata Barua of CMCH Police Camp.

Two others were named as Md Belayet, 35, and Enamul, 37, while the identity of the fourth could not be identified immediately, said police.

Contacted, Mohammad Shahidullah, additional superintendent of police (Chittagong north zone), told The Daily Star that one Jahir Uddin was returning home by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after withdrawing money [amount could not be known immediately] from his account at Colonel Hat branch of Islami Bank in the port city.

The four followed him with a microbus, he said, adding, when the auto-rickshaw reached Madam Bibir Hat on Chittagong-Dhaka Highway, the microbus intercepted the auto-rickshaw.

Introducing themselves as members of the Detective Branch of police, they tried to force him into the microbus, said the additional SP, adding hearing his screams, locals besieged the microbus and started beating the four.

The locals also set fire to the microbus, he said, adding police later rescued the four and rushed them to the CMCH.

Vehicular movement on the Chittagong-Dhaka Highway remained suspended for around an hour at that time.

Interestingly, Jahir went missing after the incident. “We are trying to know his position,” said Shahiddullah.
