Khulna Agriculture University Act-2014 was approved by the cabinet today, with the aim at establishing a new agricultural university in the port city.

The move follows a pledge by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her Khulna visit in March 2011, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters after the meeting.

He also said the education ministry had already undertaken necessary preparations to set up the university. The cabinet had in principle approved the draft law in October 2011.

The draft of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank Act-2014, which aims to expand the reach of the bank’s services, was also approved by the cabinet meeting chaired by the premier.

According to the proposed expansion, the bank will be able to open new branches and introduce agent banking, mobile and online services, the cabinet secretary said.

A new definition was also proposed, which will bring fish processing and processing of livestock products under the category of agricultural activities while fishermen, livestock and poultry breeders will be considered small farmers.
