Election Commission (EC) today cancelled the nomination papers of Krishak Sramik Janata League President (KSJL) Abdul Kader Siddique for Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) by-poll on loan default charges.

“The nomination papers of Siddique were cancelled for loan default based on a statement of Credit Information Bureau of Bangladesh Bank,” Returning Officer Syed Khurshid Anwar told The Daily Star.

The EC also cancelled the nomination papers of Kazi Ashraf Siddique of Jatiya Party (Ershad) on charge of loan default while rebel Awami League candidate Principal Abu Sayeed Azad for not having his signature in the affidavit, said Anwar, also regional election officer of Mymensingh.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant after AL lawmaker Shawkat Momen Shajahan died of cardiac arrest on January 20. He was elected lawmaker from the constituency uncontested during the January 5 parliamentary polls.

Seven people had submitted nomination papers to contest the polls.

The other candidates are: Awami League-nominated candidate Anupom Shajahan Joy (son of late lawmaker Shawkat Momen Shajahan), Abdul Malek Miah (former general manager of Bangladesh Bank), Jatiya Party (Manju) candidate Sadek Siddique and independent candidate Dr Liakat Ali.

The EC has deferred the by-polls scheduled for March 23 as the law enforcers will remain busy with the fourth phase of upazila elections on the same day. The by-election now will be held on March 29

The last date for withdrawal of the nomination papers is March 6.
