Jute mill workers today laid siege to Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) regional office in Khulna, demanding reopening of the jute mills and arrears of irregular staffers.

Hundreds of workers under the banner of Sramik-Krishak, Chhatra-Janata Oikya Parishad took position at the gate of BJMC around 11:00am, reports our Khulna correspondent.

While talking to The Daily Star, Ruhul Amin, coordinator of the organisation, said, "We want the government to reopen the jute mills immediately."

Around 50,000 workers became jobless when the state-run jute mills were closed during this pandemic, he said.

The workers said they will continue their protest until their demands are fulfilled.

Golam Robbani, regional coordinator of BJMC, sat with a six-member team of the workers to discuss the matter.
