JU sacks professor for locking up students, teachers
Suspends lecturer for sexually harassing a female student
The Jahangirnagar University authorities have terminated a professor of Botany for locking up students and teachers inside department building on several occasions and suspended a lecturer pending probe into allegation of sexually harassing a female student.
The decision to terminate Md Ali Akondo Mamun, a professor of Botany department, came at a syndicate meeting last night as he confined teachers and students inside the department on March 14 this year following a row over formation of an admission committee for 2013-14 sessions, the syndicate members said.
The syndicate meeting, the highest decision making authority of the university, also suspended AKM Anisuzzam, a lecturer of Accounting and Information Systems (AIS), after the authorities have primarily found him guilty of harassing a female student sexually.
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam, also head of the two committees formed to probe the incidents, presided over the meeting.
“We, the syndicate members, accepted the recommendations of probe bodies as the both were found guilty,” Prof Kamrul Ahsan Titu, a syndicate member told The Daily Star.
On March 14, the authorities received complaints from the department demanding legal action against Mamun after he confined teachers, students and staff inside the department building for not inducting him in a committee formed to hold admission test in 2013-14 sessions.
Four days into the incident, an emergency syndicate meeting suspended him and a five-member probe committee was formed to investigate into the matter.
The sacked professor, who also has previous records of locking up teachers and students, was found guilty of breaching university’s code of conduct.
Meanwhile, AIS lecturer Anisuzzam faced suspension over his alleged involvement in harassing a female student sexually. A probe committee was formed yesterday to investigate the incident and asked to submit a report in a month.
Meanwhile, registrar of the university could not be reached over phone despite several attempts.
