Farzana Islam, a professor of anthropology department, has been appointed vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University.

She is the first female VC of the country.

In a circular issued today, President Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, appointed her for the next four years.

On February 20, JU senate elected a panel of three vice chancellor candidates following resignation of Prof Anwar Hossain in the face of around a year-long movement by a section of teachers demanding his removal.

Prof Farzana of anthropology secured the first spot bagging 43 votes, while Prof Abul Hossain of physics and Prof Amir Hussain of economics trailed her with 42 and 33 votes.

All of them said to be loyal to former VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir.

Earlier, a section of teachers demanded reconstitution of the senate before election, as most of the senate members were loyal to Prof Shariff who was removed in May 2012 on charges of irregularities in teachers' recruitment.

The teachers feared that the problems during Prof Shariff's tenure might come back if the senate was not reconstituted.

On January 23, the president appointed Prof MA Matin as acting VC for a month after Prof Anwar quit on January 13 and directed him to arrange the election within the period.
