JU female student killed in road crash

Hundreds of Jahangirnagar University students blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway and torched two buses protesting death of a female fellow, who was killed by a pickup van in front of the university main gate at Savar this afternoon.

The deceased, Fatema Khatun, 22, a third year student of Anthropology department was waiting for Dhaka-bound bus near to the JU gate beside the highway with two others when the pickup van driver lost control over the steering around 4:45pm, reports our JU correspondent.

JU proctor Tapan Kumar Shaha confirmed the incident.

Hailing from Sathia upazila of Pabna and a resident student of Pritilata Hall, Fatema died on the spot while two others have been rushed to a local private clinic.

The wounded -- a dairy farm employee and his wife – were soon whisked off to Dhaka.

The van driver however received injuries in another accident at CMB area of Savar, nearly two kilometres off the university. He also rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The students raised four-point demand including -- paying compensation to the victim's family, widening the road in front of the JU gate, building a foot over bridge and putting on speed limit in the university area.
