Class VIII terminal tests Junior School Certificate (JSC) and its madrassa equivalent Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations began throughout the country this morning.

Around 21 lakh students are expected to appear for the tests which began from 9:00am today after the exams were postponed twice because of Jamaat-e-Islami-sponsored hartals.

JSC candidates appeared for the Bangla first paper today while JDC students Quran Mazid and Tazbid tests.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid visited a JSC examination hall at Motijheel Government Boys High School in Dhaka this morning and urged all the political parties not to impose hartal during examinations for the sake of the students.

This year, a total of 20,90,692 students -- 11,05,509 boys and 9,85,183 girls -- from 27,925 schools and madrassas will sit for the JSC and JDC tests at 2,525 centres under eight general education boards and one madrassa board.

Struck by hartal, the education ministry initially postponed the November 2 and 3 examinations today and November 14 for the tests. Then again, the tests for November 5 and 6 were rescheduled on November 19 and 20.
