JS body to visit Tongi juvenile centre

The parliamentary standing committee on the social welfare ministry yesterday decided to visit Tongi Juvenile Development Centre in Gazipur to investigate the alleged irregularities and mismanagement there.
The decision came a day after five juveniles slashed their arms with sharp objects at the reformatory reportedly in protest of mistreatment. The date of the visit was not known.
Speaking at a meeting of the committee at Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban, the ministry's secretary said there were some problems at the centre including widespread drug abuse by the inmates and rivalry among different groups.
In February, 20 juveniles of the same centre cut their foreheads, arms and wrists by blades protesting misbehaviour and physical abuse by the supervisor.
