JnU suspends BCL gen secy

Jagannath University authorities today suspended two top leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) including the unit’s general secretary for harassing chemistry department chairman regarding a tender clearance.

The suspended student leaders are -- Sirajul Islam, an Economics department student, also the general secretary of BCL JnU unit and Islamic History and Culture department student Shamim Ahmed, organising secretary of university BCL unit.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the university disciplinary committee.

The university authorities formed a convening committee, headed by Prof Sayed Alam to procure furniture for common room worth Tk 5 lakh.

On March 13, some BCL activists including the duo on gunpoint forced Prof Alam to give them the clearance certificate against that tender.

Prof Alam told journalists that the duo forced him to provide the clearance when he went to the newly appointed student's welfare director's room.

Following the incident, the teachers boycotted tomorrow’s rally for recovering the illegally occupied dormitories organised by the committee Sangram Parishad, of which, Sirajul is the member secretary.

JnU vice chancellor Prof Mijanur Rahman said: "We have taken the decision by temporarily suspending the duo against whom the allegation was filed. We have formed a probe body for further investigation of the incident."
