JnU students stage sit-in for hall recovery
Jagannath University students demonstrating for the recovery of its 11 dormitories from illegal occupation staged a sit-in, blocking a road in front of Jatiya Press Club road in the capital this morning.
Protesting yesterday's police action on them, the students are also demanding removal of DC of Lalbagh zone and OC Moniruzzaman of Kotwali Police Station.
Following the sit-in, vehicular movement on the road remains suspended for three hours till 2:00pm.
City people suffered as traffic congestion spilled over from Bijoynagar to Paltan intersection, Paltan to Secretariat and Shahbagh to Matsya Bhaban.
The students have been demonstrating since February 12, demanding "recovery" of their 11 dormitories, including Tibet Hall, at different parts in Old Dhaka from illegal occupation.
Hundreds of students wearing black badges took to the streets around 11:00am today and started the demonstration programme in front of the press club. They were chanting slogans against the illegal occupation and demanding removal of the DC.
As per their scheduled programme, a section of JnU teachers formed a human chain on the road around noon.
Prof Dr Ali Akhter, president of the JnU teachers' forum, threatened to announce a tougher movement from a rally on the campus tomorrow if their demands are not met.
At least 50 people, including teachers and students, were injured as police charged truncheons and fired rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrating JU students yesterday.
