Jhenidah BNP leader stabbed dead by AL man

An upazila-level BNP leader was stabbed to death allegedly by an Awami League activist in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah this morning.

Deceased Ismail Hossain, 58, was vice-president of BNP Kaliganj upazila unit and also party president of ward No. 1 of Kaliganj municipality unit, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.

Ismail was elected councillor of the municipality in 1990 and 1995 and an acting mayor in 1998.

Shahjahan Ali, 34, a local AL activist, stabbed Ismail when he went out of his Chapali house around 7:30am, Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said quoting locals.

Ismail was whisked off to Jessore Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.   

Shahjahan is involved with drug business, police and locals said adding that he was arrested during the last caretaker government regime for drug trading.

Condemning the murder, Kaliganj upazila BNP president and ex-BNP lawmaker Shahiduzzaman Beltu demanded exemplary punishment to the culprit immediately.
