JCD, Swechchhasebak Dal leaders get bail

The High Court today granted bail to the president of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal and general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal for six months in 17 separate cases filed in connection with violence and arson attacks in the capital last year.

Swechchhasebak Dal President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel got bail in nine cases while JCD General Secretary Habibur Rashid got bail in all the eight cases against him, Masud Rana, a counsel to the leaders, told The Daily Star.

There is no legal bar to Habib to get release from jail but Sohel cannot get release since he has been shown arrested in four other cases, he said.

The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed granted the bail after hearing separate bail petitions filed by the leaders.

Police filed the cases with Shahbagh, Ramna, Paltan, Shahjahanpur and Sutrapur police stations after the mayhem of Hefajat-e Islam on May 5 last year.
