Japanese coastguards today rescued 10 crew members including two Bangladeshi nationals after a Cambodian-registered cargo ship sank off northern Japan.
Of them, three crew members-- two Chinese and one Myanmarese -- died after they were taken to hospital, reported AFP news agency.
They were plucked from chilly waters in the strait separating Japan's main Honshu and northernmost Hokkaido islands.
The 10 crewmen abandoned the ship just before it sank. The seven crew members including the Bangladeshis are in a stable condition.
The captain of the ship was mentioned as Bangladeshi. However, their identities could not be known immediately.
Contacted, Mohammed Nore-Alam, counsellor at Bangladesh embassy in Tokyo, said they did not receive any information about the incident yet.
“We will see the matter after talking with the Japanese officials,” he told The Daily Star over phone this evening.
The 1,915-ton Cambodia-registered Ming Guang was carrying scrap metal from the northern Japanese port of Hakodate to South Korea when it sprang a leak and began sinking late Thursday.
The Japan coastguards received an emergency call from the captain around 11:40pm Thursday (local time), according to Jiji Press of Tokyo.
The captain then reported the ship was listing off Aomori prefecture. The freighter listed further and finally sank around 6:05 am Friday, according to the coastguards.
The 10 crew members were drifting in the sea, wearing life jackets, when rescuers arrived at the scene, the report said.
