Jamaat man killed in gunfight with joint forces

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed during a gunfight with joint forces members in Debhata upazila of Satkhira this morning.

Four policemen including the officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station received bullets during the gunbattle.

The deceased is Anwarul Islam, 30, a Rokon (full-member) of Jamaat upazila unit, reports our Satkhira correspondent.

Tarok Biswas, OC of the police station, said police received information that the activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were gathering at Ghunpara to commit subversive activities.

As soon as the joint forces personnel reached the spot around 9:00am, at least 250 activists opened fire and also hurled crude bombs targeting the law enforcers, the OC said.

In retaliation, the joint forces members opened fire triggering a gunfight, he said.

The joint forces team found bullet-hit Anwar lying on the ground when the Jamaat-Shibir men fled the scene.

Anwar was declared dead when he was rushed to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

The law enforcers recovered a pipe gun and six cartridges from searching the body of Anwar while two handmade bombs and two sharp weapons from the spot.
