Jamaat man hurt in Ctg 'gunfight'

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami sustained bullet injuries during a "gunfight" between the party men and police in Satkania upazila of Chittagong early today.
Three policemen also received minor injuries during the "gunfight" that continued nearly 30 minutes, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
During the "gunfight", police detained another Jamaat man named Mohammad Rimon from the spot, Khaled Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkania Police Station, told The Daily Star.
The injured Jamaat activist was identified as Mohammad Nasiruddin, of Alinagar village in the upazila.
Nasiruddin who is now undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital is accused in three cases.
Of the cases one was filed with Satkania Police Station for attacking police on September 17 during a Jamaat-called countrywide hartal.
Police arrested Nasiruddin at his residence around 12:30am, OC Hossain said.
The "gunfight" took place around 4:00am when a team of Satkania police acting on the detainee information raided Dubipara village, an adjacent village of Alinagar, to recover arms, the OC said.
As soon as the law enforcers reached near a pond, a hideout of Jamaat-Shibir men, the associates of Nasiruddin opened fire on them, triggering the "gunfight", the OC said.
The activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, conduct violence activities in the area forming a gang named "Basorgroup", the OC said.
During the "gunfight", Nasiruddin tried to escape and caught in line of fire. He received bullet on his left leg, the OC added.  
Police fired 20 shotguns while Nasiruddin's aides nearly 50 bullets during the melee.  
Police recovered two firearms, eight cartridges and three sharp weapons from the spot.
Sub inspectors--Fazlul Haque and Nazmul Haque -- and assistant sub-inspector Ansarul Haque took primary aids from Satkania Upazila Health Complex.
