Internet disrupted

The internet service has been disrupted in Bangladesh for the last two days by a technical fault in equipment of the subsea cable SEA-ME-WE-4, which is placed between Mumbai and Chennai in India.

“The data that comes from the western side of the globe is facing the disruption,” said Monwar Hossain, managing director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company.

Subscribers of the SEA-ME-WE-4 cable, Bangladesh's lone subsea cable, are still getting 70 percent of data, he said.

“We are trying to maintain service through other ways.” Parts of Bangladesh's six international terrestrial cables (ITC) are also connected to the Indian cables, and are facing similar problems.

 “We are facing some problems. As we are connected with multiple cables in India the problem is insignificant,” said Abbas Faruque, head of government affairs of Fiber@Home, an ITC company said.

Currently, Bangladesh has a total of seven international cables, including a subsea cable.
