India reported a record number of 1,133 coronavirus-linked deaths and 75,809 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, health ministry data showed this morning.

Though the number of daily cases saw a fall today after reporting over 90,000 cases for the last two days, India's Covid-19 deaths number is the highest so far.

With the new confirmed cases, the total number of cases across India, which is now the second-most affected country, has risen to 42,80,442.

Despite reporting a high number of new cases daily, the country's recovery rate has been impressive. This morning, the health ministry, in a tweet, said 33,23,950 or 77 percent of people have recovered from the infection. India now has 8,83,697 active Covid-19 cases.

Nine states, including West Bengal, and federally-ruled territories have reported a recovery rate of more than 80 percent, it said.

West Bengal, which witnessed a day-long complete lockdown yesterday in a bid to break the chain of virus transmission, reported 85.2 percent recovery even as the death toll in the state rose to 3,620 till Monday night after 58 more people succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours.

An addition, 3,077 fresh cases in the last 24 hours pushed the coronavirus tally in the state to 1,83,865 so far.

Of the 58 deaths in the last 24 hours, Kolkata accounted for 16 followed by neighbouring North 24 Parganas district (13), Howrah (8), Hooghly (6) and Paschim Medinipur (3).
