4G internet services to resume in Jammu and Kashmir

High-speed internet services will be restored on a trial basis in limited areas of Jammu and Kashmir after August 15, the Indian government told the Supreme Court.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the Indian government, informed this to the apex court bench headed by Justice N V Ramana.

The decision came after the top court asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to explore the possibility of restoring 4G services in certain areas of the federal territory on August 7.

The outcome of the trial will be reviewed after two months, the top court was informed.

The bench, also comprising justices R Subhash Reddy and BR Gavai, said this is a fairly good stand on the part of the respondents -- the Indian government and the Jammu and Kashmir administration.

High speed internet services in militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir was suspended over a year ago when the Indian government withdrew the special constitutional status of the area under Article 370 and split the area into two federally-governed territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
