13 killed in India’s Uttar Pradesh blast

At least 13 people were killed and six injured when an explosion ripped through a shop in Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh state today, officials said.

Some people were suspected to be trapped under the debris of three houses adjacent to the shop which collapsed after the fire caused by the explosion, they said.

The blast took place at the shop in Rohta Bazaar. Workers at a carpet factory behind the shop could be among those trapped under the debris, District Magistrate Rajendra Prasad said.

Locals claimed that Mansoori was also in the business of making illegal firecrackers.

Earth-moving equipment has been pressed into service to carry out rescue works. Teams of forensic experts have reached the blast site, Prasad said.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh S said two local policemen have been placed under suspension in connection with the incident.
