India records highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases

India recorded the highest-ever single-day surge of 16,922 Covid-19 cases as the country's total tally went up to 4,73,105 in the last 24 hours.

The country's death toll climbed to 14,894 with 418 new fatalities, reports our New Delhi correspondent, quoting the Indian health ministry.

With this, India has registered over 14,000 cases per day for the sixth consecutive day.

According to ministry data, current active cases stand at 1,86,514 while 2,71,696 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, which puts the recovery rate at 57.43 percent.

Among the 418 new deaths, 208 were in Maharashtra, 64 in Delhi, 33 in Tamil Nadu, 25 in Gujarat, 14 in Karnataka, 11 in West Bengal and 10 each in Rajasthan and Haryana.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has extended the lockdown in the state till July 31 to check the spread of the contagion.

Her announcement of the lockdown extension came yesterday when West Bengal recorded the death of Tamonash Ghosh, the first public representative who was a sitting legislator of ruling Trinamool Congress, due to the virus.

Of the new cases, Kolkata reported the highest (155). The number of recovered patients in the state in the last 24 hours stood at 484, pushing the total number of recovered to 9,702.

With 11 more people succumbing to the virus, the total toll moved up to 591, according to the state health directorate.
