Heavy rainfall submerged parts of Dhaka in knee-deep water today, causing much suffering to city dwellers.

Beginning yesterday, the rain came down hard around 8:45am. The water logging has exposed the poor drainage system in the city.

Purba Rajabazar, Karwan Bazar, Panthapath, Shahbagh, Shantinagar and some other lower-lying areas in the city have been inundated.

Commuters, especially students and office goers, suffered a lot in the morning due to lack of transports amid torrential rain.

The suffering of the commuters worsened as the rain created long tailbacks on different roads.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department has recorded 14 millimetres rainfall till 6:00am in 24 hours in the capital, said an official of the met office.

The rainfall will continue for the next two to three days, he added.

The rainfall occurs as monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over north Bay of Bengal, according to the Met office forecast.

The moderate rain showers accompanied by temporary squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country, the forecast said.
