Housewife murdered, another set on fire

A housewife was killed allegedly over a family feud in Sadar upazila of Joypurhat yesterday while another was set on fire by her husband allegedly for dowry in Kotchandpur municipality area of Jhenidah on Tuesday.

In Joypurhat, a housewife was stabbed to death allegedly by her in-laws over a family feud in Sadar upazila yesterday, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.

Deceased, Rekha Khatun, 18, was the second wife of Abdul Aziz of Pachurchak area of the upazila. 

Police arrested Rowshan Akhter, 45, Aziz's first wife, and her son Rony Mia, 23, in connection with the murder.

Police quoting deceased family members, said Aziz married Rekha last year and had been living with her at Moslemnagar area of the town while his first wife Rowshan, lived in Pachurchak area with her to sons Rony and Sony.

Rowshan and her two sons, went to the house around 11:00am, and were engaged in an altercation with Aziz over trifling matter. At one stage, Rowshan and her sons stabbed Rekha with a machete when the later tried to bare them from quarrelling, leaving her critically injured.

Neighbours rushed her to Joypurhat Modern Hospital, where she died an hour later.

Our Jhenidah correspondent reported that, a housewife was set on fire by her husband allegedly for dowry at Dudhsara village in Kotchandpur municipality area on Tuesday.

The victim is Jahanara Khatun, 28, daughter of Abdus Samad, a resident of Poradah village in Moheshpur upazila of the district.

Victim's family members said, Abdul Jalil, 32, son of Nur Islam of the village have been torturing Jahanara for dowry since their marriage 12 years back.

Jahanara, mother of two minor girls, who is undergoing treatment at Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex, said Jalil set her on fire when she denied bringing money from her parents while she was cooking in the evening.

Hearing her cry for help, neighbours rushed in, rescued her and took her to the local health complex.

Contacted, Shahidul Islam Shahin, officer in-charge of Kotchandpur Police Station, said a case has been filed with the police station and they are trying to arrest the culprit.
