Hold citizens' dialogue to solve problems

Hold citizens' dialogue to solve problems

Dr Kamal urges govt

Eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday called upon the government to organise a national dialogue with citizens to solve the country's problems over issues, including restoration of the 1972 constitution and independence of judiciary.

Ignoring the 1972 constitution means disrespecting the three million Liberation War martyrs and rejecting the December 16, 1971 victory day, he said, asking the government to restore the constitution.

The internationally acclaimed jurist was addressing a discussion, “'72's Constitution and Independence of Judiciary”, organised by Bangladesh Gonotantrik Ainjibi Samity at the Supreme Court Bar Association's hall room.

Regarding judiciary's independence, Dr Kamal said, “The Chief Justice is like a pillar of the country and should always remain bound to his oath. If he shows biasness then a pillar falls down.”

Stressing the need for an act regarding appointment of judges, he said, “For the time being you (government) have taken responsibilities of the country so why is the act yet to be formulated? Judges should be recruited upon their merit and skill.”
