Transcatheter valve implant now in Bangladesh

Good news for patients suffering from aortic valve stenosis as the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant surgery has made its way to Bangladesh.

Though expensive at the moment, the minimal invasive procedure will ensure a faster recovery for patients and assures them to get normal life-ready by five days.

United Hospitals Limited successfully carried out its maiden operation of implanting the aortic valve of a patient on July 25, the hospital announced in a press briefing today.

The implant was placed on Dr Sayeedur Rahman, a renowned dental surgeon of Barisal, said Dr Momenuzzaman, chief consultant of cardiology at United Hospital

At 85 and living with aortic stenosis for the past several years, patient Sayeedur told The Daily Star that he "feels quite well after the operation that took Tk 35 lakh".

Doctors at the United Hospital said high cost of the operation with robust format instrument will reduce if more people keep their trust on it and go through the operation.

Aortic stenosis is a deadly disease because the patients live in a high mortality risk, doctors say.

The only remedy in this case is aortic heart valve replacement, which can be done by open heart surgery. But patients at old age with many other complications like kidney insufficiency, lung problem, or block in heart vessels might be at risk of surgery and anesthesia.
