Dengue outbreak a headache for govt: LGRD minister

LGRD Minister Tajul Islam today said the dengue outbreak this year has turned out to be a headache for the government.

The minister said experience from recent years based on entomologists' findings showed that eggs of dengue-causing aedes mosquito develop into larvae under favourable conditions due to water accumulation after light rain.

Despite the fact that there has not been any rain in the last one and a half months, dengue is still causing headaches, he continued.

The minister was addressing a dialogue at a city hotel organised by the government's Local Government Division and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC).

"Compared to last year and 2020, this year's dengue is a very bitter experience for us," the minister added.

He said about 300 new cases of dengue infection have been reported yesterday which was not supposed to happen.

Although the dengue outbreak was mostly concentrated in Dhaka city in the past, this year its outbreak was reported in other areas of the country, he added.

He urged public representatives of both the city corporations to come forward with their initiatives to tackle the dengue outbreak.
