50 get Covid in a day

Bangladesh registered 50 new Covid cases in 24 hours preceding 8:00am yesterday, taking the country's total caseload to 1,953,188, health authorities said.

With no new Covid death reported for the 29th consecutive day yesterday, the total fatalities from the virus so far remained at 29,127.

The daily test positivity rate slightly increased to 0.79 percent from Thursday's 0.60 percent during the 24-hour period as 6,313 samples were tested, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

On Thursday, 35 cases were reported.

The mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.49 percent. The recovery rate rose to 97.31 percent as 221 patients recovered during this period.

In April, the country reported only five Covid-related deaths, 1,114 new cases and 14,100 recoveries, according to the DGHS.

Among the five dead, two were unvaccinated Covid patients.

The country reported its first zero Covid death in a single day on November 20 last year since the pandemic broke out here in March 2020.
