HC jails 4 govt officials

The High Court today awarded different jail terms ranging from five days to one month to four government officials for violating injunction order issued by the court in 2008.

The convicts are -- Syed Mizanur Rahman, director (administration) of Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre; Syed Abdur Rob, manager and Sabbir Ahmed, assistant manager, of Court of Wards in Gazipur; and Monirul Islam, former chairman of Land Reform Board.

The HC issued an injunction on March 3, 2008, directing the Gazipur administration not to evict Abul Kalam alias Kaliullah and eight others from their land at West Lakkhipura village in Joydevpur municipality.

Ignoring the HC injunction, the officials evicted them and demolished their houses.

Sabbir and Monirul each was awarded five days’ jail term.

The HC bench of Justice Sharif Uddin Chaklader and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman came up with the verdict after hearing a petition by Kaliullah and other victims.

The petitioners' lawyer, Khalilur Rahman, told The Daily Star that the convicts will lose their jobs following the verdict.
