HC bans battery-run rickshaw
The High Court today banned plying of mechanised and battery-run rickshaws across the country as the vehicles are running without any licences.
Five rickshaw owners’ associations had filed the petitions with the HC on different days last year and this year seeking HC directives upon city corporation authorities to provide licences to vehicles.
The petitioners said they have applied to Dhaka and Chittagong city corporations for the licenses but the authorities did not disposed of their applications.
So, they prayed to the HC to direct the authorities to allow them to run their machanised and battery-run vehicles after disposing of their applications.
The lawyer of the Dhaka Chittagong city corporations told reporters that the mechanised and battery rickshaws have no authority to run in the city corporation areas following the High Court verdict.
The HC in January this year issued separate rules upon the city corporation authorities to explain why they should not be directed to dispose of the applications of the rickshaw owners’ associations and to allow them to run their vehicles.
The authorities replied to the HC rules that they have no authority to give licence to the mechanised and battery run rickshaw to ply as per the law.
