HC asks govt to stop earth filling in Buriganga in 48hrs

The High Court today directed the government to take appropriate steps to stop earth filling and grabbing of the river Buriganga at Charmirerbagh near Dewanganj of South Keraniganj in 48 hours.

In response to a writ petition, the court also asked the government to deploy mobile court so that none can fill-up earth and grab land of the river.

The court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why it should not be directed to remove the structures from the land of the river at Charmirerbagh.

The High Court bench of Justice Quzi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altab Hossain came up with the order and rule following the writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The rights organisation recently submitted the petition following a media report saying that a group of influential people have been grabbing the land of the river and constructing a structure there.

In the petition, the organisation prayed to the court to direct the government authorities to stop land grabbing and construction of the structure in the river.
