HC accepts plea for quashing Pintu’s BDR carnage conviction
The High Court today accepted for hearing an appeal against the conviction handed down to former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu in BDR carnage case.
A Dhaka court last November sentenced Pintu to life term imprisonment and fined him Tk 5 lakh for his involvement in the 2009 carnage at Pilkhana headquarters of Bangladesh Rifles, which has later been renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh.
At today’s hearing, the HC stayed a portion of the lawyer court verdict that fined him Tk 5 lakh.
The HC bench of Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Huq and Justice Nazrul Islam Talukdar passed the order after a brief hearing on the apple.
Puntue submitted the appeal in January seeking acquittal of the charges.
Pintu and Awami League ward-level leader Torab Ali got life term in the Pilkhana carnage case.
The Third Additional Judge’s Court in Dhaka found the duo guilty of involvement in the killing of 57 army officers during the bloody mutiny at Pilkhana in 2009.
Pintu, a former president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was also convicted of instigating the massacre of 74 people including the 57 senior and mid-ranking officers while Torab of conspiring.
