Hasina 'attacker' brought back from US

A man, who allegedly hurled bombs at the Dhanmondi residence of Sheikh Hasina in 1989, has been brought back from the US this morning, police said.

Najmul Maksud Murad was arrested in the US with the help of the country's police, FBI and Interpol after CID issued a notice through Interpol, said AKM Kamrul Ahsan, public relations officer of the Police Headquarters.

Murad made the bomb attack on Hasina’s Dhanmondi residence in the capital on August 19, 1989, the police official said.

He is also accused in two other cases filed with Motijheel and Sabujbagh police stations in Dhaka. But details about the charges could not be known immediately, he said.

Murad was taken in CID custody for interrogation.

Murad fled to the United States on 3rd October, 1996 and sought asylum as an activist of the Freedom Party.

In 2011, after requests from Bangladesh, the Interpol issued a red alert against him.

Later on February 2, 2012 the Homeland Security Services arrested Murad from Atlanta and handed him over to Bangladesh today, reports the online edition of Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
