Hartal in Rangpur tomorrow

The BNP-led 20-party alliance has called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Rangpur district for tomorrow protesting confinement of its chief Khaleda Zia to her Gulshan office in Dhaka.

The hartal will be enforced in the district from 6:00am, said Mozaffar Hossain, Rangpur city president of BNP, reports our Rangpur correspondent.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia remains confined to her office since January 3.

Protesting her confinement, Khaleda called an indefinite countrywide blockade from January 6.

The hartal also called to protest the arrest of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other central leaders of the party and to press for withdrawing the “false” cases against the district level BNP leaders.

The announcement came from a press briefing at the BNP’s district office this afternoon.

At least 23 people have been killed centering blockade and hartal violence across the country.
