Police early today recovered a pistol, which they believe was used in the killing of Phulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haq in Feni.

The law enforcers raided the office of Jihad Chowdhury, the prime suspect in the killing, on Mizan Road in Feni town early today and recovered the pistol and four bullets, reports our Feni correspondent.

Ekramul, who was the president of Phulgazi union Awami League, was shot and then burnt alive in his car in broad day-light on May 20.

Police conducted the raid the office today based on information provided by Jahid, who is now on eight-day remand in the case.

The pistol and bullets were recovered from inside a television box at Jahid’s office around 12:45am, said Mejbah Uddin, a sub-inspector of Feni Model Police Station.

The gun might have been used during the killing mission, said Abul Kalam Azad, inspector of the police station and also investigation officer of the case.

Five days into the killing of Ekramul, police arrested Jihad, joint general secretary of Phulgazi Awami League, in connection with the murder. He was placed on an eight-day remand yesterday.

So far, 17 people have been arrested in the murder case filed by Ekramul’s brother Rezaul. Ten of them have been placed on eight-remand and another five people for five-day remand.

The rest will be produced before the court today, police said.

During primary interrogation, eight arrestees picked up by Rapid Action Battalion confessed that Jihad along with two others -- Abidul Islam Abid and Sohel -- masterminded the murder.

Azad said police have started quizzing all the detainees separately for further information.

Another six-member investigation team headed by Additional Deputy Inspector General Mahbubur Rahman from Chittagong is supposed to arrive in Feni today, the OC said.
