Govt working to fulfill Bangabandhu’s dreams: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government is working to fulfill the remaining dreams of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“No-one would be allowed to play with the fate of the countrymen,” said Hasina adding the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami jointly killed people and torched mosques, temples and business establishments in the name of anti-government movement.

"They (BNP, Jamaat) killed two army personnel, two BGB men, 55 drivers and burned 150 innocent people to death as well as torched 583 schools in the last few months," she said. 

Hasina, also the president of Awami League, was addressing a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan this afternoon to mark the historic March 7.

Hundreds of leaders and activists of ruling Awami League joined the rally.

The rally began around 3:00pm with the speeches of mid-level leaders of AL-led 14-party grand alliance.

The AL leaders and activists from across the country joined the rally with banners, placards and festoons.

Earlier in the morning, the premier paid rich tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman placing wreaths at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi.

On this day in 1971, Bangabandhu, through his fiery and soulful address, made a clarion call to the people to fight against the Pakistani occupation forces to achieve the long- cherished independence.

Before a rally of a million of freedom- loving people at the then Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) on March 7 in 1971, Bangabandhu in a virtual announcement of independence declared, "--- Ebarer sangram amader muktir sangram, ebarer sangram swadhinatar sangram (the struggle this time is for our freedom, the struggle this time is for our independence)".
