Govt trying to influence Manzoor murder case: Fakhrul
The government is trying to influence the Gen Manzoor murder verdict, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed today, only a week before the judgement is set to be delivered.
“I heard that the judge dealing with the case has been transferred. The government is interfering with the freedom of the judiciary in this way. Such things are happening repeatedly,” Fakhrul said.
He was replying to reporters after placing a wreath at the grave of late president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Fakhrul was accompanying the five BNP leaders including Moudud Ahmed, Rafiqul Islam Miah and Khandarkar Mahbub Hossain, who went to pay homage to Zia on their release from jail.
The comments came three days after Hosne Ara Aktar of the First Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court, who was dealing with the Gen Manzoor murder case, was transferred.
Talking to the journalists, Fakhrul said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's speech on probing BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and Hawa Bhaban's alleged connection in the 10-truck arms haul is politically motivated.
Terming Hasina speech 'false and provocative', the BNP leader said, “The prime minister made the comment to disgrace Khaleda and to harass her politically."
This is part of a conspiracy by the government to malign Khaleda, he added.
Hasina yesterday announced her government will open a fresh inquiry into the 10-truck arms haul cases as the names of Hawa Bhaban and Khaleda have emerged during the probe and trial in the sensational cases.
The name of Hawa Bhaban came up in the depositions of witnesses, she mentioned. “This means that Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and some BNP leaders were involved in it.”
