The government will take initiatives to ban Jamaat-e-Islami by June for its war crimes in 1971, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq said today.

“We have no plan to ban religion-based political parties but we are thinking it for the anti-liberation force, Jamaat,” the minister said.

He was addressing the 13th Muktir Utsab (Celebration of Freedom) organised by Liberation War Museum at DU Physical Education Centre in the capital.

His comment came more than six months after a special High Court bench by a majority view declared Jamaat’s registration illegal.

The bench gave the verdict on August 1 last year upon a writ petition.

When the military-backed caretaker regime in 2008 introduced the registration system, 38 political parties, including Jamaat, were registered with the Election Commission.

Jamaat in phases amended its constitution massively to meet the registration requirements, as no unregistered political party is allowed to take part in elections.
