Govt to bring back Nur Hossain soon: Minister
The government will take necessary steps to bring back Nur Hossain, the prime accused in Narayanganj seven murders, from India within shortest possible time, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said today.
“If the arrested person is Nur Hossain, he will be brought to book,” the state minister said while talking to reporters at secretariat in the capital.
The state minister’s comments came hours after Kolkata police reportedly arrested Nur Hossain along with his two "accomplices".
An anti-terrorism squad of India arrested Nur Hossain in Koikhali area in Kolkata last night.
Asked whether Bangladesh will have to face any complexity in the whole process, the state minister expressed his hope that the government will be able to return Nur Hossain without any difficulties as there is an extradition treaty with India.
In the previous years, some criminals have been exchanged between the two countries, he said adding that it may take some time.
While talking to our Narayanganj correspondent, Superintendent of Police Khandaker Mahid Uddin confirmed the arrest after a telephonic conversation with Anik Sarkar, an assistant superintendent of the anti-terrorism squad of Kolkata police.
Nur Hossain was arrested on the fourth floor of Indraprastha apartment complex in Koikhali area, two kilometers off Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport around 9:30pm yesterday, reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting Arnab Ghosh, deputy commissioner of Bidhan Nagar police in India.
"They will be produced before a court seeking remand later in the day," the DC said.
He mentioned the names of Nur Hossain’s aides as Zahidul Zaman and Salim Bidhan.
The arrestees had no documents with them at the time of their arrests, the DC said.
Asked whether they were involved in any criminal activities in India, he said police are investigating all the aspects.
A fugitive, Nur Hossain stands accused for the gruesome abduction and killing of seven people including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and an advocate Chandan Sarker.
The seven were abducted on April 27 in the city and six of their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya River on April 30 and the other one's the next day.
The three were kept at Baguihati Police Station, Subrata Acharjee, the Somoy TV correspondent, told The Daily Star over phone from Kolkata.
A firearm, several mobile phones, SIM cards, laptop and compact disks (CDs) were recovered from the possession of the three, he said.
Local Awami League leader Nur Hossain, also close aide to ruling AL MP Shamim Osman, fled the country two days after the abduction.
Nazrul's father-in-law Shahidul Islam claimed that Nur Hossain and some others paid elite force Rapid Action Battalion Tk 6 crore to get Nazrul killed.
Three top officials of Rab-11 -- Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana -- were fired over their alleged involvement in the crime and are now behind the bars facing investigation.
Tareque was the commanding officer of Rab-11 in Narayanganj when the abductions and killings happened. He is also the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
Arif Hossain and Masud Rana have already made judicial confession admitting their roles in the killing.
A leaked phone conversation suggests that Shamim Osman helped Nur Hossain flee the country and take shelter in India to avoid arrest.
