Govt should quit over Narayanganj killings: BNP
The government should resign taking the responsibility of the recent abductions and killings of seven people in Narayanganj, a senior leader of BNP said today.
"It is clear that a minister and his family members are behind the abductions and killings. So the government should first investigate involvement of the ministry’s family in the incident," BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
He was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of late president Ziaur Rahman in the capital's Sher-e Bangla Nagar area.
Fakhrul went to the grave along with the recently released leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies to pay tribute to president Zia.
The BNP leader came up with the demand following allegations that son and relatives of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya has involvement with this abduction and killing of the seven people including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sharker.
The government is behind such crimes like abductions and killings as well as is indulging the law enforcers for it, Fakhrul claimed.
On April 27, seven people -- Nazrul Islam and his four associates and Chandan Sarker and his driver -- were kidnapped separately, but around the same time from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road. Six bodies were found in the Shitalakkhya river three days later and another the next day.
On May 5, the father-in-law of Nazrul Islam, a victim among the seven victims, claimed that son of a powerful Awami League lawmaker brokered the deal with some Rapid Action Battalion members to kill Nazrul.
Three days into the allegation was made, Maya claimed that none of his family members have any link with the accused in the case filed for the abduction and murder of seven persons in Narayanganj.
He came up with the statement following media reports on his son Dipu Chowdhury and his son-in-law Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Rab-11 commanding officer dismissed three days ago, having alleged links with the crimes.
Tareque and two other Rab officials were dismissed over the allegation Tuesday.
