Govt inaction undermines HC: BNP
BNP today blamed the government for its inaction in nabbing the three Rab officials for their alleged involvement in the recent seven-murder incident in Narayanganj saying it is tantamount to undermining a High Court (HC) order in this regard.
On May 11, the HC directed the government to arrest three officials of Rapid Action Battalion who were sent to retirement for their alleged role in the killing of Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam in exchange of Tk 6 crore.
The government did not act according to the HC directive which is similar to undermining and ignoring the court directives, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged.
In a press conference held at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, Fakhrul came up with the remark five days after the HC order which asked the government to nab the three accused Rab men.
The people of Narayanganj city are being threatened with life like Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of the victim Nazrul Islam, and so they are not willing to record their statement during the mass hearing over the killing incident, Fakhrul told reporters.
Earlier, the authority concerned sent the Rab-11 Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana for their alleged involvement in the murder incident.
Referring to the Thursday’s abduction attempt of a rights activist Nur Khan, he said the people are being victimised of killing, abduction and forced disappearance when they are speaking against criminal activities of the government.
Fakhrul also claimed that a group of people in plain-clothes picked up Rafiqul Islam, president of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal of the city’s Demra thana unit from his residence last night.
About the party’s pre-announced rally at Demra on Saturday, he said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) did not give permission yet to hold the rally on security ground.
“As alternative, we have sought permission to stage the rally at the ground of Matuail Concord Housing on Saturday. We expect that the government would allow us for the sake of democracy,” he said.
“Consequences will never good if the government stops space for BNP,” Fakhrul warned.
