Blaming the government for the abduction of Abu Bakar Siddique, husband of environmental lawyer Syeda Rizwana Hasan, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia today alleged that it freed the victim sensing dire consequence for the act.

"The government was responsible for this abduction. An oust government movement could have started had Bakar not freed immediately," the former premier said while addressing the national council of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, BNP's labour front, at the Engineers’ Institution of Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Describing Siddique as an innocent and non-political person, the former premier praised the government for "releasing him immediately and unhurt".

Many people, including BNP leader Ilias Ali, have become victims of abduction and forced disappearance during the rule of incumbent Awami League government.

"Please, return them back to their families immediately," she said addressing the government.

The country is passing through a critical time as people’s lives are not secure under the current regime, she alleged, adding: "None excepting Awami League leaders, workers and supporters are secure in the country."

Terming the government "autocratic", she said the government's days are numbered.

"Awami League will be forced to step down immediately and have to be held accountable before the people for its misdeeds and mismanagement in different sectors," she warned.

Khaleda Zia also chief of the 19-party alliance has reiterated her demand for an immediate inclusive general election in the interest of the country’s democracy.

She claimed her party as a pro-Liberation force and alleged that there is no contribution of Awami League in the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
